Adults will be assessed on a case-by-case basis relating to their current Spotlight profiles or performance CVs.
All of our young performers are now selected through an application and online audition process. In the past, pupils attending the Jackie Palmer Stage School were automatically enrolled with the agency. However, as opportunities within the performing arts become increasingly competitive, we’ve introduced a more selective joining process to ensure we can provide the highest level of talent for casting directors, as well as the best opportunities for those we represent.
While acting training and experience are important, JPA are also looking for young performers who demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm for the industry, and an authentic, natural, and memorable talent.
No reputable agency charges a joining fee, so it is free to be represented by JPA, a member of the PMA.
However, we operate as a commission-based agency, meaning we take a percentage of earnings from paid work secured through us. This is why our performers must be able to demonstrate a certain level of acting ability in order to be considered for paid opportunities by casting teams.
There are, however, two main expenses in getting a professional acting profile ready for casting opportunities:
Spotlight is the UK’s leading casting directory used by casting directors, agents, and production companies to find professional actors for film, television, theatre, and commercials
Spotlight plays two main roles at JPA:
Parents/ guardians play a vital role in supporting young performers throughout their journey in the entertainment industry. Before applying to join JPA, we ask families to carefully consider the level of commitment involved and that they can support their child in the following ways:
At JPA, we believe that supporting parents and guardians is just as important as supporting our performers, so we’ve created a Parent’s Welcome Pack when you join filled with hints, tips, and information.
No acting agency can guarantee work. What we can guarantee is that we will actively seek out suitable casting opportunities and submit performers for roles that match their age, skills, experience, and profile.
Casting decisions are made by production companies and casting directors, not talent agents like JPA, and many factors influence why a specific a performer is selected.
Success in this industry is a partnership, and so JPA is always focused and invested in securing opportunities for our talent because when they succeed, we do too.
Our agents review casting briefs every day and carefully select performers based on a range of factors, including (but not limited to) age, ability, experience, availability, appearance, and overall suitability for the role.
If a performer is shortlisted, they may be invited to submit a self-tape (a short video audition recorded at home) or attend an in-person audition, where the final the decision moves into the hands of a casting team. JPA will provide guidance, support, and practical information about auditions when you join.
It’s important to understand your child will not be submitted for every role that becomes available. Successful representation is about quality, not quantity. Our agents carefully match performers to opportunities where they have the strongest chance of success, and you can be confident every submission is made with your child’s best interests and potential opportunities in mind.
A high-quality set of professional actor headshots is needed for your Spotlight submission and are a vital part of your casting profile. Casting decisions are often based on initial appearances, and an agency cannot confidently submit a performer for a role if their photographs no longer accurately reflect their current looks.
To help keep profiles up to date, JPA aims to arrange one or two professional photography sessions each year for our younger performers, whose appearance may change significantly through growth and development.
If you are unable to attend an agency-arranged session, you will be responsible for sourcing updated headshots independently. We strongly recommend researching a reputable local studio which has specific experience in “actor headshots,” as these require a particular style and approach that differs from standard portrait sessions.
Professional headshot sessions are rarely cheap, and we would hate for you to spend money on photographs unsuitable for Spotlight. If you are not sure whether a photographer meets industry standards, please send their website details to JPA before booking and we’ll be happy to review their credentials.
